Make Room for God: Release Your Pride

A few days ago, God spoke so clearly to my heart:

“Don’t let pride get in the way of My blessings.”

As I prayed and processed His words, I felt a tug to sit down and write. When God calls me to write, it’s always for someone who needs to hear it. So if you’re reading this and wrestling with pride and the call to walk in humility, know that this message is for you.

Over the past few weeks, God has blessed me beyond what I ever imagined.

I passed my Board Certification exams and launched my latest calling, a Christ-centered mental health coaching program.

It’s been an incredible season of answered prayer. Yet, if I’m being honest, it hasn’t come without its spiritual battles.

When I left my last ministry position, I struggled hard. I had uprooted my entire career plan to follow the call into ministry. So when that door closed, it felt like my purpose closed with it. I wondered if God still had a place for me. I feared I had missed His will somehow.

But in His perfect timing, He opened a new door, one that confirmed He wasn’t finished with me yet.

And with that open door came something unexpected: pride.

The applause of others felt good. Slowly, subtly, my heart shifted. I wasn’t just serving for God’s glory; I was seeking approval from people.

Pride is sneaky like that.

Even in ministry, even in Kingdom work, pride can take root. It shifts our focus from God’s approval to man’s applause. It tricks us into thinking we’re self-made, when in truth, everything we accomplish is only by His hand.

The truth is, pride isn’t just a ministry problem… it’s a heart problem.

It can creep in through our jobs, our schooling, our families, our friendships, even our social media posts.

Wherever there’s the potential for praise, there’s the potential for pride.

And when we value the opinions of people more than the voice of our Creator, we lose sight of why we started.

Simply put, pride = people-pleasing.

And Scripture is clear about where pride leads.

“Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; though they join forces, none will go unpunished.”

Proverbs 16:5

Pride distances us from God. It deceives us into thinking our success is by our own strength, not His sovereign will. It slowly hardens our hearts and blinds us to the grace we so desperately need.

But where pride destroys, humility restores.

God calls us to live with a posture of humility. To lay down our pride and remember who truly deserves the glory. Humility says,

“God allowed me to accomplish this. I will serve Him with it.”

The Bible reminds us again and again:

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.”

Proverbs 11:2

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

James 4:6

Pride puffs up. Humility kneels down.

So, when you feel pride rising in your heart, pause.

Remember the One who called you. The One who equipped you. The One who opened the doors you now walk through.

Let’s be people who don’t just receive blessings, but who reflect the Blesser.

Let’s humble ourselves and say,

“I would not be here if it were not for the grace of God.”

Friend, He deserves every bit of the glory.
