A note to the girl who stayed in on Halloweekend

I used to live for Halloween weekend. It was the weekend when I could dress up in a cute Halloween costume and party from Thursday to Saturday. As I began my journey with Christ, these weekends became less and less important to me. Now, I stay home on Halloween weekend, paint pumpkins, watch cute Disney movies, go to pumpkin patches, and do all the super fun stuff I used to do before I allowed the world to tell me the way I should be spending Halloween. Though I LOVE my wholesome Halloween celebrations, I used to feel a little FOMO seeing people go out, be invited to parties, etc. If this is what you feel this Halloween, this post is for you!

This FOMO feeling isn’t anything you should be ashamed of. You’re human. You are bound to feel this as you become that new creation you’re striving to be in Christ! Though you shouldn’t feel shame, you should pay attention to your feelings rather than stuff them down.

As we work on our relationship with Christ, something remarkable happens in our hearts. We tend to desire the wills of our flesh less and less until our hearts are full of only what God wants for us! We aren’t being “boring” or “buzz kills” because we no longer desire to go out and participate in the sins God calls us from. We are being changed! We are allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our steps!

Galatians 5:19-23 show us the fleshly desires we should stay from and the holy characteristics we should strive to have. We can only fight our flesh and walk in step with Christ if we allow the Holy Spirit to take control. How do we do this?? It’s simple! We take time for God every single day! We pray, read His word, earnestly yearn for His will to be done, and develop our relationship with Him!

See, God doesn’t expect us to have the power to deny our flesh. He knows how hard it is for us. That is why He sent His spirit to walk in step with us so that when our flesh gives us a feeling of FOMO, we can counter it with His word, His peace, and His love! We aren’t perfect, and these feelings are bound to happen, but lean on God! He is right there with you.

Sometimes it can feel disheartening to be the only one not invited or included in these halloweekend plans. This was something I seriously struggled with when I began my walk with Christ. Still, because I choose not to allow my flesh to create temporary happiness out of things that can cause long-term pain, I am not only more at peace, but I am filled with joy, healthy, and not dealing with the consequences of actions that happen when we give in to those desires! This is attainable for you, too!

You’re not “boring” or a “buzz kill.” You find your happiness in things that bring long-term joy, and that is something to celebrate!!

Galatians 5:19-23

“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
