Can I be honest for a second?

I haven’t been reading my Bible every day. It’s not that I didn’t want to. Life just got crazy; school got hard, jobs got hard, and I just didn’t make time for it. This week, I’ve been sick, meaning I’ve had absolutely nothing to do, and yet I still didn’t crack open a Bible until I received one in the mail. That small Bible I received was just the wake-up call I needed!
I own a ton of study Bibles, which is so cool because they all teach me so much! But, sometimes, these Bibles can feel so daunting. It feels like I’m reading study material for my P.h.D. Let me tell you, all that reading can get old even if you love it… I got this new Bible in the mail, which was just what I needed. There are no vast and daunting context passages, no added devotionals, just God’s word.
We live in an era where we have to have the latest Bible that everyone is using, the cutest journal, and the cutest pens and highlighters just so we can post on Instagram, but what we fail to remember is that all we truly need is God’s word.
Mary knew a little something about this. In Luke 10:38-42 we see Martha and Mary as Jesus enters their home. Martha was so detracted by all the “things” she needed to do for Jesus that she forgot the most crucial thing: listen! I had turned into a Martha with the best intentions. I was buying the best study Bibles. I was doing everything I thought I needed to do, but all I needed was Jesus.
If you have been struggling to read your Bible because you’re so focused on how it “looks,” I encourage you to go to a bookstore, pick up the most basic Bible, and just read! I have finally found my passion for Christ again and remembered why I started all the studying, to begin with! Now, I am ready to use those big study Bibles to further my knowledge and reading. Sometimes, all we truly need to do is get back to the basics of Jesus.
