His Mercies are New Every Morning

It’s March 1st!! Which means we’re (hopefully) done with snow. The days are getting longer. The sun is starting to feel warm again. Everything that looked dead a few weeks ago is about to start growing. Genuinely, it feels like a reset.

There’s something about spring that makes you want to clean your house, open the windows, start fresh, and maybe even reset your life a little. So in the spirit of new beginnings, I want to talk about what it looks like to start new with God, not in a dramatic, church-camp kind of way, but in a real, everyday way. Because if we’re honest, most of us don’t need a big emotional moment. We just need a fresh start.

God Actually Loves Fresh Starts

One of my favorite verses is from Lamentations 3:22–23:

“Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

New every morning.

Not new every year when we finally “get it together.” Not new when we’ve been consistent for 30 days. Not new when we stop messing up.

Every morning.

That means even if February felt spiritually dry… even if winter felt heavy… even if you’ve been distant, distracted, inconsistent, or just tired, you wake up to new mercy.

You don’t have to earn your way back into God’s presence.

Peter Is Proof You Can Start Over

When I think about His mercy, I think about Peter. In John 18, he denies Jesus three times. This is the same Peter who said he would never leave Him. And then, under pressure, he folds. I think we relate to Peter more than we’d like to admit.

We say we trust God until anxiety hits.

We say we’ll stay consistent until life gets busy.

We say we won’t fall back into that habit, and then we do.

But in John 21, after Jesus rises, He doesn’t shame Peter. He restores him. Three times He asks, “Do you love Me?” mirroring the three denials, and then He gives Peter purpose again. Jesus didn’t cancel Peter. He recommissioned him.

Your mess-up does not disqualify you from starting again.

The Prodigal Son Is About Coming Back

In Luke 15, the prodigal son runs far from home. He wastes everything. He ends up broke and desperate. But the turning point of the story isn’t when he has it all together. It’s when he decides to go home. And when he does, the father runs to him.

God is not sitting back waiting for you to crawl your way into His approval. When you take one step toward Him, He moves toward you.

Sometimes starting new with God simply looks like coming back.

Opening your Bible again.

Praying again.

Worshiping again.

Trusting again.

It doesn’t need to be perfect friend, just be honest with Him.

God Does “New Things” Even When You Don’t Feel New

In Isaiah 43:19, God says:

“See, I am doing a new thing!”

We often forget that sometimes God is doing something new before we feel anything different. Spring doesn’t show up overnight—the ground shifts before we see blooms.

Maybe this season for you isn’t about big visible change. Maybe it’s internal:

• A softer heart.

• A willingness to forgive.

• Letting go of shame.

• Rebuilding consistency.

• Learning to trust again.

Small obedience is still growing.

So What Does “Starting New” Actually Look Like?

Starting new with God might look like:

Setting a 5-minute timer and reading one Psalm.

Talking to God in your car instead of scrolling.

Confessing something you’ve been avoiding.

Getting back in the community.

Choosing to believe God isn’t mad at you.

You don’t need a dramatic change, you just need the next step.

God is not surprised by where you are right now. He knew this season was coming. He’s not frustrated with your pace. He’s patient.

March 1st feels like turning a new page.

The days are getting lighter.

The cold is fading.

New growth is coming.

Maybe let this be the month you stop waiting to “feel ready” and just start. Because with God, you don’t have to wait for a new year to begin again. You just need a willing heart.

And guess what? His mercy is already there waiting for you in the morning.
