Why do we fear death?

Updated: Aug 23, 2024

This week, I was faced with an assignment that asked me to ask a very open question: what do you fear most? There weren’t any multiple-choice answers. There are no guided examples—just a question. Remarkably, most of the people who answered this question for me revolved their answers around death. I think my answer would have also revolved around it for the longest time. Why is that we fear death the most? I mean, as Christians, aren’t we supposed to fear death the least? If you have this same fear, YOU’RE NOT ALONE! Keep reading because I hope to bring some peace to this fear today.

Like many of us, I also feared death. I feared death because I had questions like, “Is it going to hurt?” “what happens after?” “what happens to my family after?” are pretty typical questions to ask ourselves. It took a lot of bible studying and, honestly, about a year of praying over that fear until I realized something important: when you die, the world will still move. Time doesn’t stop. People keep going. They don’t carry that fear of you passing anymore. I think that’s the thing. We forget that the sun rises again the next day. Others have to move on with their lives. On the other hand, we are not getting the chance to move on or correct past mistakes. We have passed the chance.

I think we fear death not because we aren’t confident in God and what He did for us. I think we fear death because our chance to fix things, repent, bring others to Christ, and hear “Well done my good and faithful servant” is over. We subconsciously forget that, as Christians, we don’t have to question where we’re going. As long as we’re saved and have accepted that Christ died for us, we know where we’re going. As Jesus died on the cross, He saw the people were troubled. Instead of fearing His death, He said:

“Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, {there} you may be also. “And you know the way where I am going."Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?"Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me" (John 14:1-6)

See, satan wants us to fear death. He wants us to forget that God sent Jesus to die for us so that we may live eternally with Him. He wants us to fear the one thing that brings us face-to-face with Jesus. Because of that doubt, he can feed on us and weaken us. Do not allow the enemy to prey on you. Remain solid and firm in the fact that as a saved Christian, you WILL see Him in heaven! I know it’s hard to get to a place to feel that peace, but with constant prayer and want for understanding, God will reveal the exact peace I now feel to you!
